The Healthy Approach to Entrepreneurship

by Dena-Lynn

in Entrepreneurship

Okay – you know the common characteristic traits of an entrepreneur. But, can you pin down the specific activities of an entrepreneur at any given moment? It can be a bit difficult because you’re often wearing many hats, especially if you’ve made the decision to be a solopreneur – running your business independently.

Healthy LifeYou’re in charge, making big decisions and small. The success or failure of your business lies squarely on your shoulders. Can you handle it? If it’s any consolation to you, know that the pressures and responsibilities are the same whether you’ve made the choice to leave the corporate world after many years of experience, or if you decided to forge forward in this direction from the start.

You’re the one who is taking on the risks and taking on many tasks at once in order to make sure that everything is going the way it’s supposed to – the way you envision. I’ve heard it said that, “the entrepreneur is everything between capital and labor.” This can feel like a lot – especially for one who just wanted to turn a little passion into a business. Or, for one who wants to do a little something on the side.

This probably looks a lot like you. And if it does – you need to place one more thing on your list of priorities and in your business plan, if you will. If you want to have a chance at turning a profit this year.

You need to take care of you because You Are Your Greatest Asset

You – the entrepreneur/solopreneur – The Achiever – is at risk of losing it all if you don’t take care of your health better than the average person. Could this be just one of the reasons that 95% or so fail in their independent business venture? Perhaps?

As a person who decided to live this lifestyle you must not only take care of your health as is traditionally thought of – the medical aspects, etc. You must also be proactive in consistently making sure that you give yourself a checkup from the neck up. It all flows from what’s up there.

You want to condition your mind and body to always be in the optimal performance state that’s appropriate for whatever you’re doing. How?

Healthy Lifestyle for the Entrepreneur

Practice meditation and/or yoga => Learn how to rest without your mind wandering. Learn to open your mind so that your creativity will flow. Learn to be in the moment so that you can focus without effort.

Nutrition => Throw out the sugary and salty foods that you crave. Replace with fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts. Not only will these foods satisfy cravings between meals – they provide essential nutrients that your body needs. Learn to eat only what your body needs for fuel – providing sufficient daily calories. Don’t under-eat unless you want to put yourself out of business because they’ll be nothing of value flowing from you then. And, release that extra weight. Be honest with yourself – if you must, go on a diet.

Movement/Exercise => According to your physical ability, engage in regular exercise. Tai Chi, high impact aerobics, weight lifting… whichever you choose – gentle stretching – movement/exercise is necessary to engage in on a regular schedule so that you will really feel alive and fired up to work in your business. Get the blood flowing, gain energy, reduce stress, weight control, gain physical strength and stamina, mental stamina. The benefits to you as an entrepreneur are huge. Do not forgo this element of your well being.

Mindset Development => It’s held that your feelings are founded in the way you think. Change your faulty thinking patterns that underlie the manifestation of uncomfortable or problematic feelings and behavior. Mindset development is crucial towards this end. Take control of your feelings – be proactive. Attend personal mindset development seminars, read the many recommended books. It’s no secret that there really is a millionare mindset. Discover it.

Have Fun => Laugh, dance, smile, travel, jump around…. you get the picture – need I say more? Whatever it is that you love to do that’s fun for you – just do it. I know that you have a lot of business to take care of… take the business with you… cell phones, laptops – just make sure that you put yourself in a place where you are having fun. Even if your place is in your own backyard. Schedule it. Isn’t entrepreneurship wonderful for that?

Give Back => What goes around, comes around. Karma. The universe returns what you put out into it. Sound familiar? You reap what you sow. Giving… it does your spirit good. Yes, all of those adages have proven time and time again to be true. Make a plan to give a smile, a helping hand, a shoulder, or a stern admonishment or advice (serious people love serious talk). Just give according to what’s necessary. Pay attention to the people around you. At the end of the day – ask yourself, “what did I do for someone else today?”

Living a healthy lifestyle is not difficult – change your thinking and behavior. It facilitates your ability to be the Entrepreneur and Achiever that you envision. Be empowered to live your dreams.

Great lesson, Dena. It’s so true that if you let your health and healthy attitude go, you’ve lost, or at least seriously compromised your greatest asset – YOU.

This is so important, but when we’re caught up in “bigger” and more “immediate” issues, we so quickly forget it. Thinking of our own well-being doesn’t seem to come naturally. We take it for granted. We need to be grateful for our health, and where we’re at in our growth. And have fun!

Thanks, Dena. I really enjoyed reading this post.

Hi Dena,

A healthy body and healthy mind are key to the way we should live our lives. We should take nothing for granted. We are given so much, but sometimes we lose our focus.

Losing focus of the importance of taking steps to maintain good health is certainly common when an entrepreneur is busy building an empire. As the foundation of an empire, an entrepreneur ought to remain mindful of what happens to anything that is built on a crumbling foundation. It falls.

Great read Dena sometimes we don’t take care of ourselves like we should, I once read a person can’t be truly happy unless all areas of life are being tended to physical, mental, spiritual and financial.

Hey Dena, Well written reminders for all of us Entrepreneurially minded folks. The healthy lifestyle is something we forget when we get bogged down in the details. Like any habit being healthly can be learned overtime. And we need to be healthy to keep our businesses running.

Hi Dena!

This is good and VERY important information. Since most of us are wearing many hats, it is so easy to eat junk and not take the time to eat what we need to to keep as all healthly, because if we aren’t healthy, then what’s the point in any of this?

Also…very important…have fun. We tend to get so wrapped up in marketing that we forget to let loose and go crazy every once in awhile!

Take Care!

Hey Dena!

It is so true how important it is to take care of our health as entrepreneurs. When we have that ‘sky’s the limit’ and ‘no excuses’ attitude, you are determined to get things done at all costs, sometimes at the expense of our health.

Staying up into the wee hours of the morning studying, writing articles, blogging, troubleshooting one our plugins because it’s not acting right, etc…we sometimes forget to eat AT ALL, let alone eat right. We must invest in ourselves. How else are we going to show others that our sacrifices are worth it?

We must exude energy and life in all that we do; and taking care of our bodies allows us to do just that. Great post 🙂

Hi Dena: Great way to wellness that the Western Medical World, in my opinion, is closed minded to. Check out the video link that I shared on the chat window. This is right on for what you are talking about. Keep it up, my new friend.

Hi Dena,

Wow! I get it! This is so weird that I read this. I had some bad news from the doctor today and it is a direct result of violating ALL of these rules. I guess that I needed to read this. It will be a great guide for me in the upcoming weeks. I appreciate that you are writing about our health and encouraging us to be conscious!
